Two numbers that
pick the material.

Most material decisions come down to what happens when the part gets hit, and what it weighs once it is up there. Everything below is a published value or computed from published density — no marketing multipliers.

If a break could injure someone, this chart has already answered your question. Polycarbonate absorbs roughly 133× glass and 33× acrylic and deforms instead of throwing fragments. Full acrylic vs. polycarbonate comparison →

Every plastic we stock is lighter than glass, and all of them are a fraction of steel — UHMW and HDPE run about an eighth the weight of steel at the same thickness. That is why plastic replaces metal in liners, guards, and panels: not because it is stronger, but because one person can carry it, hang it, and change it without a crane. Twin wall is the outlier at a twelfth of glass, because it is two thin skins and air.

FAQ
03

Common questions.

What types of plastic does Silver State Plastics stock?

We stock acrylic/plexiglass, polycarbonate, HDPE, UHMW, ABS, PVC, nylon, acetal, styrene, KYDEX thermoplastic, and polycarbonate twin-wall — over 12 material types in multiple thicknesses and colors.

Can you cut plastic to custom sizes?

Yes. All materials are available cut-to-size while you wait. Walk in with your measurements and we'll cut it on the spot. Just a $50 order minimum, no shipping delays, same-day service.

What's the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate?

On the ASTM D 3763 instrumented impact test, glass fails at 6 inch·lbs, acrylic at 24, and polycarbonate at 800 — so polycarbonate takes roughly 133 times the impact energy of glass and 33 times that of acrylic. Acrylic wins on appearance: 92% light transmission, a polished edge, and far better scratch resistance. Use polycarbonate where a break would hurt someone, and acrylic for displays, signage, and enclosures. We stock both and can help you choose.

Do you sell plastic wholesale?

Yes. Our wholesale program provides competitive volume pricing for sign shops, fabricators, manufacturers, and contractors. We maintain deep inventory with fast local fulfillment from our Sparks warehouse.

What is UHMW plastic used for?

UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) has 10× the abrasion resistance of steel. It's self-lubricating and chemical-resistant, making it ideal for conveyor components, wear strips, chute liners, dock bumpers, and high-wear industrial applications.
