The Rules
02

Compliance, handled.

What the 2010 ADA Standards and your local code require for this sign type — checked on every proof before anything gets cut.

01
Stairwell Content
Stair identification signs carry the stair name, floor level, the floors served, and exit discharge information — content set by the building code, not preference.
02
Occupancy Numbers
The maximum occupancy figure comes from the fire marshal or building department. We build the sign; the number is theirs. Posted where they say, sized to be read.
03
Area of Refuge
Refuge areas need identification plus instruction signage on the communication system. Braille and tactile requirements apply — these are identification signs.
04
Local Variances
Stair and code signage is where local fire authorities add requirements on top of the ADA. We build to your jurisdiction’s spec — tell us where the project is.

FAQ
04

Common questions.

What has to be on a stairwell identification sign?

Under the IBC, interior exit stairways serving more than three stories need a sign at each floor landing showing the stair name, the floor level, the floors served, and the exit discharge level — with tactile and Braille requirements for the floor-level identification. Content is code-driven; we'll draft it correctly from your floor data.

Who determines the maximum occupancy number?

The building department or fire marshal calculates it from the occupancy classification and floor area. We fabricate the posting sign once the number is issued — don't order occupancy signs before that number is final.

Are these signs required for a certificate of occupancy?

In most jurisdictions, missing stair, exit, and occupancy signage is a punch-list item that delays final inspection. It's one of the cheapest things on the project to get right early — and one of the most annoying to fix at the end.
